The Kingdom of Nod

by
Calvin Huckabee

The year is 1969. It is late summer and Huck is excited about spending five days at Panama City Beach with Ringo and two of their school chums before starting his senior year at Selma High School. His dream is to lose his virginity while away from home, away from his hard-shell Baptist parents. The Flashmobile, a red 1964 GTO convertible, is their chariot, and along the way they play road games with three Black chicks in a Mercury from Birmingham. When they finally arrive at Ringo’s beach house, Huck is relieved to  have safely ended the fun and games, but Marble-eye has other ideas, and after Flash parks, he runs back to the road to flag down the Mercury. Shadow steps out. She is a purple-black with an Afro and hippy clothing. The others drive away.
